Fabricator’s tip Fix the hinged door to a strong post grouted into the floor, not just to the frame.

How to Choose a Window Grill Design

Start with the floor. Ground floor windows need strong MS or SS with small gaps. Upper floors can take aluminium or wider patterns. Then think about the room:

  • Bedrooms: one openable section with a lock.
  • Kitchen: plain bars that let smoke out and wipe clean.
  • Front windows: jali or box work for privacy and a good street look.
  • Kids at home: gaps of 4 inches (100 mm) or less, no footholds.

What makes a grill cost more: heavier steel, SS 304 over 202, laser cutting, scroll work labour, more welded joints and powder coating.

Fabrication, Fitting and Care

Ask for holdfasts set at least 4 inches into the masonry. On a wall that is already plastered and painted, expansion anchors work instead. Every weld should be ground smooth before priming. Use red oxide or zinc chromate primer, then enamel or PU paint. Near the sea, check MS grills every monsoon and touch up rust early. Wipe dust out of jali work monthly.

Grill design questions

Which window grill design is best for a house on the ground floor?

Square boxes or upright bars of 12 to 16 mm MS, with gaps of 4 inches or less. Fix it with deep holdfasts and keep one openable locked section in bedrooms.

Is an aluminium window grill strong enough?

Yes for upper floors and sliding windows. For ground floor security, MS or SS 304 is stronger.

What is the best window grill colour?

Black, charcoal and dark grey hide dust and suit most walls. White looks fresh but shows dirt. See more on the grill colour ideas page.

What is a khidki grill design with jali?

It is a window grill with a close pattern, such as diamonds, leaves or a laser cut sheet. It gives privacy and shade.

How do I add a safety grill to a sliding window?

Fit the grill on the outside face of the sliding frame or inside the opening. Leave room for the handle to move, and add one hinged panel with a lock for emergency exit.

How often should a window grill be painted?

MS grills want new paint every 2 to 3 years, and more often by the sea. SS and aluminium grills need no paint, only regular cleaning.
