Balcony Grill Design Ideas for Indian Flats and Houses
18 designs Balcony grills and railings Updated 8 Oct 2026
A good balcony grill design keeps out thieves, pigeons and falls, but still lets in breeze and light. In a flat, the balcony is often the only open space, so the grill decides how much of the sky you still see.
Below are 18 designs that suit Indian homes: full cover grills for flats, half height grills, SS grills, box patterns, safety grills for kids and grills that hold glass. Under every photo you will find the steel section used and a fitting tip for your grill wala.
If you only need the waist-high railing, see our balcony railing design page. For the look of the whole balcony from the road, see balcony design.
Modern Grill Design for Balcony Full Cover
Full cover grills close the balcony from floor to slab. They suit flats on any floor, homes with small kids, and areas with monkeys or pigeons.

Slim vertical flats run floor to ceiling, so the balcony feels like a room with a screen, not a cage. Good for city flats on the third floor and up.
- MaterialMS 25 x 5 mm flat
- StyleVertical flat bars
- SuitsUpper floor flats
Fabricator’s tip Keep one 2 foot wide openable shutter with a padlock so you can reach the AC unit and exit in an emergency.

A white grid with fine SS mesh behind keeps pigeons out without making the balcony dark. White also hides dust better than black on a sunny side.
- MaterialMS 12 mm square bar
- Style6 inch square grid
- SuitsPigeon prone flats
Fabricator’s tip Fix the mesh with SS screws on a flat frame, not tack welds, so it can be removed for cleaning.

Wavy horizontal strips inside vertical posts give movement to a plain front. The bronze powder coat hides city dust and still looks fresh after years.
- MaterialMS 30 x 5 mm flat
- StyleWave strips in frame
- SuitsHigh rise flats
Fabricator’s tip Shape all wave strips on one fixed jig for matching panels, then powder coat after all welding is done.
Simple Grill Design for Balcony
Plain bars cost less, weld fast and are easy to repaint. Most homes in smaller towns still pick a simple iron grill.

Straight vertical bars at 4 inch gaps with one top and one bottom rail. Nothing to catch dust, and any welder can make it in a day.
- MaterialMS 12 mm square bar
- StylePlain vertical bars
- SuitsBudget homes, any floor
Fabricator’s tip Use red oxide primer on every weld before the green enamel, or rust will show at the joints first.

A waist-high pipe grill with two mid rails between posts, leaving the top open for breeze. Fine where security is not a worry.
- MaterialMS 1 inch pipe
- StyleHalf height pipe
- SuitsUpper floor houses
Fabricator’s tip Cap every open pipe end with a welded plate so rainwater does not sit inside and rust it.

Square bars set at 45 degrees make a classic diamond. It looks neat on older flats and needs fewer welds than scroll work.
- MaterialMS 10 mm square bar
- StyleDiamond lattice
- SuitsOld society flats
Fabricator’s tip Ask for every crossing to be welded on both sides, not just tacked, so the diamond does not rattle.
Steel Grill Design for Balcony
Pick a balcony grill design steel version if you hate repainting. A stainless steel grill needs no paint and stays bright for years. Choose SS 304 near the sea and in humid towns.

Satin SS pipes do not show fingerprints or salt spots like mirror finish does. A safe pick for flats in Mumbai, Chennai or Kochi.
- MaterialSS 304, 1 inch pipe
- StyleVertical pipes
- SuitsCoastal flats
Fabricator’s tip Insist on SS 304 for coastal homes and ask the fitter to grind and polish every weld bead.

- MaterialSS 202, 1.5 inch pipe
- StyleCurved top, vertical

Fabricator’s tip Mirror SS 202 suits dry inland towns; wipe it monthly so dust does not leave dull patches.

Square SS tubes in a black coating look like painted steel but will not rust. A strong pick for modern grey or white elevations.
- MaterialSS square tube 1 inch
- StyleSquare tube verticals
- SuitsModern elevations
Fabricator’s tip Black coating can chip on sharp edges, so ask for rounded tube corners and handle panels with care.
Box Grill Design for Balcony
A box grill projects outward past the wall line. It adds a little space for pots and drying clothes in a small flat.

The box projects about 1.5 feet beyond the wall, giving room for a clothes rod inside. Common in older flats where the balcony is small.
- MaterialMS 12 mm square bar
- StyleProjecting box
- SuitsSmall flats
Fabricator’s tip Check with your society first, and add a sloped sheet roof so the top of the box does not collect water.

Square pipes form a strong box with a large 8 inch grid. Maroon goes well with brick or terracotta walls on independent houses.

Fabricator’s tip Square tubes need drain holes at the bottom of each frame so water does not collect inside.

Small laser cut flowers sit at the centre of each box. It softens a plain grid without the weight of full scroll work.
- MaterialMS 12 mm bar and plate
- StyleGrid with flower motif
- SuitsBedroom balconies
Fabricator’s tip Weld the flower plates from behind so the front face stays clean, then sand before painting.
Balcony Safety Grill Design for Kids and Pets

Bars at a 3 inch gap with no rails in the middle, so there is nothing to climb. Ideal for flats with toddlers on high floors.
- MaterialMS 12 mm square bar
- StyleClose vertical bars

- MaterialGI mesh in MS frame
- StyleWelded mesh panels
- SuitsHomes with pets
Fabricator’s tip Use GI mesh so the wires do not rust, and paint the MS frame with zinc primer first.

An MS grill outside with aluminium sliding glass inside. You get security and can still open the balcony to the breeze.
- MaterialMS grill, alu sliders

- Material12 mm toughened glass
- StyleGlass with SS posts

- MaterialMS 16 mm square bar
- StyleLower grill, upper glass
- SuitsRain facing sides
Fabricator’s tip Run a sloped drip edge along the top of the frame to keep rainwater off the plaster underneath.
How to Choose a Balcony Grill
- Floor level: ground and first floor need a strong full cover grill. Higher floors can use lighter steel or invisible cables.
- Who lives there: with kids, keep gaps under 4 inches and skip climbable rails.
- Location: near the sea, use SS 304 or well painted MS. Inland, MS or SS 202 is fine.
- Exit: keep one openable section with a lock in every closed balcony.

| MS flat strip | 25 x 5 mm | Modern vertical designs |
| SS 304 pipe | 1 to 1.5 inch | Coastal flats |

Cost goes up with the weight of steel, the SS grade, laser cut parts, powder coating and the number of joints. More detail is in our grill design guide.
Fabrication and Care
Holdfasts should go at least 4 inches into the wall, every 2 feet or so. Weld joints must be ground smooth. MS grills need red oxide or zinc primer and a repaint every 2 to 3 years, sooner near the coast. Clean dust from patterns with a soft brush before the monsoon.
Grill design questions
Which is the best balcony grill design for home use in a flat?
For most flats, a full cover grill with slim vertical bars and one openable section works best. It keeps kids safe, stops birds and still lets light in. Pick SS 304 near the sea and MS with good paint elsewhere.
Is a steel grill for balcony better than MS?
Stainless steel does not need paint and lasts longer near the sea. MS is stronger for the same size and easier to repair, but needs repainting every few years. Both work well if the fitting is done right.
What gap should a balcony safety grill design have?
Keep the gap between bars at 100 mm (about 4 inches) or less. Avoid horizontal bars a child can use as steps. Check your local building rules too.
Can I put a balcony grill design with glass in a rented flat?
Yes, if the owner and society agree. Use anchor bolts instead of holdfasts so the frame can be removed later with little wall damage.
How high should a half height balcony grill be?
About 1 metre, or 3 to 3.5 feet, from the finished floor. Measure from the tile level, not the slab, since flooring adds height.
Does a box grill design for balcony need permission?
In many housing societies, yes, because it projects beyond the building line. Ask the society or local body before fitting one.
